National Patents May Be Now Included in the Pharmaceutical Register of the Eurasian Patent Office

According to the official website of the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO), the first national patent – patent RU 2317990 held by AstraZeneca protecting a medicine with INN Ticagrelor, was included in the EAPO Pharmaceutical Register (link).

Grigory Ivliev, the EAPO President, stated: “Inclusion of national patents in the EAPO Pharmaceutical Register upon patent owners request shows that patentholders find the Pharmaceutical Register as being a necessary tool for the protection of their intellectual property rights, and an important resource for the comprehensive protection of their intellectual property in the Eurasian space”.

The EAPO Pharmaceutical Register (link), which contains information on patents protecting active ingredients of medicines, was launched in March 2021.

This spring all countries of the Eurasian Union supported initiative to include national patents in the EAPO Pharmaceutical Register (link). Data base allowing an applicant to request the EAPO to include a national patent in the Pharmaceutical Register was created in September, however, not all patent offices were ready to provide information on the status of their national patents to the EAPO at that time (link).

Notwithstanding the possibility of including Russian patents in the EAPO Pharmaceutical Register, Rospatent considers it relevant to create a Russian pharmaceutical register being currently a prototype (link).
